Konpeito (金平糖) is produced by repeatedly coating a sugar syrup over a core consisting of a grain of coarse sugar. Each core then grows over the course of several days with continuous heating, rotating and application of syrup, eventually becoming a ball with tiny bulges after 7-13 days. In olden days, it is considered very rare and expensive due to the high amount of sugar used.
